Logistics overtakes fintech in African startup funding

Logistics and transport have become Africa’s leading startup sector by investment volume, surpassing fintech in the first nine months of 2026. According to data from Africa: The Big Deal, the logistics sector raised $780 million, accounting for 36% of total continental startup funding. This marks a significant increase from 7% during the same period in 2025.

This surge was largely driven by two major transactions: electric mobility startup Spiro, which raised $345 million, and mobility financing company Moove, which secured $250 million. Together, these two companies accounted for approximately 76% of the sector's total capital. Without these two deals, logistics funding would have stood at approximately $185 million, aligning more closely with historical levels.

Fintech remains the most active sector in terms of the number of startups funded, securing $760 million (35% of total funding). At least 80 fintech companies raised $100,000 or more during this period. Overall, total startup funding across Africa for the first nine months of 2026 reached $2.16 billion, a 4% decrease compared to the $2.24 billion recorded during the same period in 2025.
