Loire river: recreational boating restricted due to cyanobacteria

New restrictions have been implemented on the Loire river due to cyanobacteria pollution in the Grangent and Villerest dam reservoirs. Following health analyses by the Regional Health Agency (ARS), toxin levels at the Villerest dam have exceeded safety thresholds, posing risks to human health through ingestion, inhalation, or prolonged immersion.

François-Xavier Bieuvill, the Prefect of the Loire, has issued an order prohibiting all recreational boating activities that could lead to water immersion at the Villerest reservoir until September 5. The restricted area extends from the Chessieux viaduct to the dam wall. Authorized vessels are limited to small boats, rowboats, motorboats, sailboats, and pedal boats that do not facilitate swimming. Emergency, security, and maintenance vessels remain permitted to operate.
