Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla orders porch plan for Makar Dwar entry
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has directed the Central Public Works Department and architects to prepare a feasibility proposal for a protective porch at the Makar Dwar entrance of India’s new Parliament building. The request aims to shield Members of Parliament, staff and visitors from heavy monsoon rains that have made the uncovered gate difficult to use.
Makar Dwar is one of six ceremonial gates—named after animals—at the new Parliament complex, which was inaugurated in 2023 and is currently the primary entry point for most MPs. The proposal comes as the Monsoon Session, running from 20 July to 13 August 2026, faces repeated disruptions due to the season’s intense rainfall.
