Lokomotiv Yaroslavl plane crash marks 15th anniversary

Fifteen years have passed since the tragic plane crash involving the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey team. On September 7, 2011, the Yak-42 aircraft crashed immediately after takeoff from Tunoshna Airport near Yaroslavl, Russia, while traveling to Minsk, Belarus, for the season opener.

The accident claimed 44 lives, including nearly the entire roster of the KHL team. Notable victims included Slovakian hockey legend Pavol Demitra, as well as Czech players Josef Vašíček, Karel Rachůnek, and Jan Marek. Investigations later determined the crash was caused by pilot error, specifically involving braking during takeoff.

The tragedy profoundly impacted the hockey community, leading to the permanent retirement of jersey numbers 4, 15, and 63 by the Czech national team. Memorials and moments of silence continue to honor the players who were at the peak of their professional careers.
