Lokrum hosts premiere of Ibsen’s “A Woman from the Sea”

The 77th Dubrovnik Summer Festival concludes its drama program with the premiere of Henrik Ibsen’s “A Woman from the Sea” on the island of Lokrum. Directed by Ivan Plazibat and adapted by dramaturg Petra Pogorevc, the production is performed by the Festival Drama Ensemble.

The adaptation reimagines Ibsen’s original setting, moving the narrative from Northern fjords to a Mediterranean context. The production explores themes of freedom, responsibility, and equality, addressing the psychological struggles of the protagonist, Ellida Wangel. The creative team noted that the adaptation incorporates local elements, such as the island's environment and contemporary issues like tourism and climate change.

Performances are scheduled for August 20 through August 24 at 9:00 PM.
