Lola Biggs' heatwave guide: skip ice cream, choose water‑rich foods
Nutritionist Lola Biggs explains that while ice cream feels cooling, its high fat and sugar content makes the body work harder to digest it, which can increase body temperature. She also advises avoiding chips, nuts, salty snacks and white bread during heatwaves because they can heighten thirst, cause water retention and lead to fatigue.
Biggs recommends foods with high water content such as watermelon, cucumber, strawberries, tomatoes, melons and other berries. She suggests pairing these fruits and vegetables with protein or healthy fats—feta cheese, Greek yogurt, avocado or nuts—to improve satiety and replenish electrolytes. Hydrating beverages like coconut water, lemon‑infused water, mint tea and diluted fruit juice are also advised. Light meals such as salad wraps, poke bowls, gazpacho or vegetable‑based tacos are suggested for dinner to keep the body cool and energized.
