Lolland Kommune faces >500 million kroner budget shortfall

Lolland Kommune in Denmark is missing more than 500 million kroner needed to balance its 2027 budget. The shortfall stems from a shrinking population, an increasingly elderly demographic and rising social‑care costs, which together reduce tax revenues while boosting expenditures. The municipality also carries high debt per capita, low liquidity and extra costs of about 80 million kroner linked to the Femern tunnel project that have not been reimbursed.

Officials warn that the fiscal gap could lead the state to place Lolland under administration. To address the crisis, the municipal council is drafting a comprehensive reform plan that may cut the number of schools, day‑care centres, sports halls, libraries and nursing homes, and increase the use of artificial intelligence, remote work and merged administrative functions.

Despite the financial strain, Lolland is seeing growth in business and tourism, with new enterprises and an upcoming industrial park in Rødbyhavn promising jobs. The council must balance these development prospects against the pressing need for fiscal consolidation.
