Lollipop Chainsaw franchise announces film prequel and game sequel

The Lollipop Chainsaw franchise is expanding with both a new video game sequel and a live-action film adaptation. Dragami Games and Nada Holdings, alongside developer JP Universe, have announced Lollipop Chainsaw 2 Back2Back, scheduled for a 2027 release on PlayStation 5. The sequel will be directed by Hajime Tabata and features original co-writer Masahiro Yuki. The game's plot follows protagonist Juliet Starling in a transformed San Romero, now a metropolis called ‘Jaredwood’ centered on the film industry.

Simultaneously, a live-action R-rated action-comedy prequel is in development. The film will serve as a prequel to the original 2012 game, focusing on Juliet Starling during a zombie outbreak at San Romero High School. While the original game was co-written by James Gunn, neither Gunn nor original creator Suda51 are attached to the film project. Producers aim to use the adaptation to establish a new model for globalizing iconic Asian entertainment franchises.
