Lomé airport sewage pipe explosion disrupts travel

A sewage pipe explosion at Gnassingbé Eyadéma International Airport in Lomé caused significant disruption and chaos on Wednesday, September 30. The incident occurred around 1:00 PM when an aging main evacuation pipe located in the central hall's false ceiling burst due to a combination of accumulated decomposition gases and hydraulic pressure.

The rupture caused sewage, toxic effluents, and sludge to be projected onto hundreds of passengers in the main terminal. Travelers, including local residents and international passengers transiting to Europe and West Africa, were directly hit by the waste. The incident resulted in damaged property, including soiled luggage, destroyed passports, and malfunctioning electronic devices.

The airport was completely closed following the event, leading to the diversion of regional flights to Cotonou and Accra. The incident has sparked widespread indignation on social media, with critics and diplomats highlighting the lack of immediate assistance for those affected and raising concerns regarding the country's infrastructure.
