Lomé authorities increase inspections to prevent flooding

Authorities in Grand Lomé are intensifying inspections and sanitation works to mitigate the risk of future flooding following significant inundations in June. Séna Alipui, the Minister Delegate in charge of Water and Sanitation, has been conducting field visits to monitor the progress of protection and drainage projects.

During these inspections, officials visited several sensitive areas, including Awatamé, where pumping operations continue in homes affected by previous floods. The delegation also surveyed the Todman basin, Adidogomé-Soviépé, Agbalépédo, 3K, Nyékonakpoè, and coastal outlets used for the capital's wastewater evacuation.

A major obstacle to effective water drainage remains the accumulation of waste, particularly plastics, which clog gutters and drainage systems. This blockage causes rainwater to overflow into streets and residential areas. Consequently, authorities are calling on the public to practice responsible waste management and avoid discarding refuse in drainage channels to ensure the effectiveness of the infrastructure.
