Togo hosts African Union migration talks and Russia economic summit
In Lomé, Togo, delegates and experts are meeting from September 28 to 30, 2026, to prepare for the establishment of the African Union's Advisory Council on Migration. The consultations aim to improve continental migration governance, border management, and the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area. Discussions highlight that only 28.2% of intra-African travel currently occurs without a visa, prompting calls for increased mobility. Togo has already implemented visa exemptions for African citizens to encourage regional integration.
Simultaneously, Togo and Russia are advancing bilateral relations through the first session of their intergovernmental mixed commission in Lomé. The meeting focuses on transforming political ties into concrete economic cooperation across sectors such as agriculture, mining, energy, digital technology, and health. Discussions include the potential establishment of a Russian House in Togo to promote cultural and linguistic exchange, as well as enhanced educational cooperation.
