Lom ČSA quarry designated as National Natural Monument
The Lom ČSA quarry has been designated as a National Natural Monument, marking its transition from a brown coal mining site into a large-scale area left to natural development. Spanning 4,500 hectares, the site is becoming a sanctuary for diverse species, including rare orchids, solitary bees, and various birds.
The Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic is coordinating a process known as controlled succession. To maintain biodiversity and prevent invasive species from dominating the landscape, management efforts include planting mixed forests, creating ponds, and building habitats for reptiles and birds. Additionally, the water level in the quarry's lowest point is rising naturally through rainfall and groundwater, which is expected to form a lake over several decades.
