Lombardia approves law to promote nativity scene heritage
The Lombardy Regional Council has approved a new law aimed at the promotion and protection of nativity scenes (presepi) as a significant cultural, artistic, and historical heritage of the region. The legislation seeks to bolster local traditions while driving tourism and economic growth.
Key provisions of the law include the establishment of a public regional registry to map related museums and exhibitions, and the creation of the ‘Lombardy Nativity Week,’ to be held annually from December 15 to 21. Municipalities with significant scenic displays may be granted the title of ‘Open-air Nativity Museum’ or join the ‘Nativity Villages’ circuit. The law also designates historical nativity scenes as intangible cultural heritage and introduces regional competitions for schools.
A budget of 600,000 euros has been allocated for the 2026–2028 triennium, with 200,000 euros available annually through calls for proposals for local authorities, parishes, and associations to fund restorations and promotional activities. This initiative aligns with efforts to propose the nativity tradition for UNESCO intangible heritage status.
