Lombardy and Ticino agree to enhance cross-border rail mobility
The Lombardy Regional Council has ratified a five-year agreement with Canton Ticino to enhance cross-border mobility. A key component of this deal is the development of the S30 Cadenazzo-Luino-Gallarate railway line. In the medium term, the plan aims to provide service every 120 minutes between Cadenazzo and Luino, and every 60 minutes between Luino and Gallarate, with potential additional direct services to Milan during peak hours. The long-term goal is to achieve 60-minute frequency across the entire line.
Simultaneously, the Ticino Cantonal Government is advocating for increased federal resources to support broader infrastructure needs. The Canton has expressed concerns regarding the Swiss Confederation's transport planning, arguing that current proposed investments are insufficient to meet evolving demand. Ticino is seeking approximately 500 million francs for critical projects, including doubling the tracks between Cadenazzo and Locarno and increasing capacity at major railway nodes in Bellinzona, Lugano, and Mendrisio.
