Lombardy approves AI development and innovation framework

The Lombardy Regional Council has approved a new law titled ‘Disposizioni in materia di ricerca, innovazione e intelligenza artificiale per lo sviluppo sostenibile’ to support the research and sustainable development of artificial intelligence. The legislation updates previous regional frameworks to address digital transition challenges, aiming to place AI at the center of economic growth, business competitiveness, and public service improvement.

Key components of the measure include the establishment of a regional charter for AI development, which will involve universities, research centers, businesses, and institutions to guide AI usage in the productive, healthcare, and administrative sectors. Additionally, an independent scientific committee for research and innovation will be created. This five-member body will serve three-year terms, providing advisory and consultative functions to help draft a three-year strategic program and facilitate public debate on technological impacts.

In conjunction with these legislative steps, Milan is positioning itself as a central hub for the technology. The Lombardy Region has approved Milan’s candidacy to host an Innovation and Development Zone dedicated to AI, an initiative promoted by Assolombarda. This project seeks to strengthen the links between technology, research, and industry while fostering new professional skills and addressing ethical concerns such as data protection and responsible technology use.
