Lombardy approves new mushroom and truffle regulation bill

The Lombardy Agriculture Commission has approved a bill titled ‘Lombardia terra di funghi e tartufi’ (Lombardy land of mushrooms and truffles). The legislation aims to modernize rules regarding the collection, cultivation, preservation, and commercialization of mycological resources while protecting forest ecosystems and enhancing sanitary controls.

Key provisions of the bill include maintaining the general rule that mushroom harvesting remains free across the region, with a standard individual limit of three kilograms per day. The law also grants Mountain Communities and relevant authorities the power to establish payment fees, with resources potentially being reinvested into local territories.

Promoted by regional councilors Giacomo Zamperini and Michele Schiavi, the measure seeks to balance environmental safeguarding with economic development. By establishing more uniform rules, the bill intends to support associations, provide training, and strengthen the supply chain, particularly in mountainous areas where these resources represent significant cultural and economic assets.
