Florence completes new Ponte al Pino railway bridge
In the night of 26‑27 July 2026, the new 550‑tonne rail‑road bridge “Ponte al Pino” at Florence’s railway node was installed in a single lift using a 2 000‑tonne crane, one of the largest machines employed for such works in Europe. The operation was attended by Vice‑Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini, Tuscany President Eugenio Giani, senior executives of Ferrovie St Italiane and Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), and local authorities.
Rail traffic on the Florence Campo di Marte–Firenze Rifredi and Campo di Marte–Firenze Santa Maria Novella lines was suspended until 11 July 2026 to allow the installation, a disruption limited to eight days compared with the year‑long outage a traditional method would have required. Alternative transport, including extra buses and tram connections, was organized for commuters. Earlier communications from the municipality indicated that the works were proceeding without significant issues, and subsequent updates described the second phase of the project as starting with minimal inconvenience.
The new bridge replaces a 140‑year‑old structure, enhancing safety, durability and capacity at a strategic node of the national railway network.
