Lombardy citizens protest against data center expansions

Citizens and environmental groups in Lombardy are mobilizing against the expansion of data center infrastructure in the region.

In Rho, the Rhodense Committee of the Data Center Observatory has criticized the municipal government for approving an implementation plan for a new facility on via Moscova. The committee described the decision as an “extremely serious act,” alleging that the administration is ignoring a petition calling for a moratorium on such developments. Critics expressed concerns regarding the cumulative impacts of multiple data centers in the area, citing high water and energy consumption, electromagnetic exposure, and increased heat levels.

Similarly, in Pozzaglio, a petition promoted by the Rete Ambiente Lombardia has gathered nearly 800 signatures to oppose a large-scale data center planned near a school. The movement advocates for a balance between technological progress and environmental sustainability, calling the project a form of “colonization.” While local mayors and certain political factions have shown convergence on the issue, the project's approval remains subject to government authorities.
