Lombardy council pushes €2 million boost for Po River maintenance

Regional councillor Matteo Piloni of the Democratic Party has submitted a budget amendment seeking an additional €2 million each year for ordinary upkeep of the Po River and its minor water networks. The funding would also support the restoration of river docks to revive river‑based tourism and navigation along the Cremonese and Casalasco stretch, a zone noted for its high natural value.

Piloni argues that climate‑driven extreme events make continuous investment essential to prevent flood damage, protect citizens and businesses, and foster sustainable tourism. If leftover PNRR resources earmarked for Po renaturation are not allocated, Lombardy will independently provide the €2 million starting in 2026 and continue the commitment through 2027 and 2028, ensuring the Agency for the Po River (AIPO) can carry out necessary interventions.
