Lombardy data center expansion drives massive electrical infrastructure demand

The Lombardy region is seeing a significant surge in demand for electrical infrastructure to support the expansion of data centers. Terna has reported 27 projects for new electrical stations currently in various stages of authorization or design, representing a total requested capacity of 14,238 megawatts (MW).

Of these 27 projects, five are already authorized, eight are undergoing the authorization process, and 14 are in the design phase. The power breakdown includes 1,611 MW for authorized stations, 5,224 MW for those in progress, and 7,403 MW for projects still in the planning stages.

In the municipality of Rho, a specific project for a new data center owned by Goodman Olimpia Logistic srl has entered the public consultation phase. Located between Corso Europa and Via Moscova, the implementation plan for the site is available for public review until September 8, 2026, with observations permitted until September 23, 2026.
