Lombardy floriculture sector faces climate risks

The floriculture sector in Lombardy, Italy, is a significant economic pillar, comprising nearly 5,000 companies with over 10,000 employees and a turnover exceeding 300 million euros. During the “Il verde del futuro” conference in Canneto sull’Oglio, regional officials and industry leaders discussed the sector's economic weight and the growing challenges posed by climate change.

In the Canneto sull’Oglio district, a major European hub for broadleaf production, nearly 1,000 hectares are cultivated, generating over 250 million euros in exports. However, extreme weather events including heatwaves, tornadoes, and hail have caused production losses of up to 40%. To address these risks, regional authorities are working with Ismea to evaluate new insurance formulas aimed at increasing coverage and reducing costs for floriculture businesses.
