Lombardy healthcare leadership dispute sparks political tension

Political tensions have escalated within the Lombardy regional government regarding leadership appointments in the healthcare sector. Welfare Assessor Guido Bertolaso and Fratelli d’Italia representative Romano La Russa are in disagreement over the succession of Alberto Zoli at Niguarda Hospital.

Bertolaso has proposed Mario Melazzini, the current Director General of Welfare, to lead the hospital. Bertolaso emphasized that his choice is based on professional merit and competence rather than political affiliation, stating, “If the political evaluations are different, I will only rely on merit and political affiliations do not interest me.” He stressed the urgency of the appointment to ensure the hospital does not remain without general management.

Conversely, Romano La Russa has expressed opposition to proceeding with appointments immediately, suggesting that decisions should be postponed until December once the full schedule of deadlines is clarified. The dispute has drawn criticism from opposition leaders, including Democratic Party group leader Pierfrancesco Majorino, who described the conflict as an “indecent spectacle.”
