Lombardy launches early RSV immunization campaign for newborns

The Lombardy region has launched its third consecutive annual campaign to provide free immunization against Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) for newborns. This year, the campaign has been moved up by one month, beginning on September 1 instead of October 1, to provide protection before the peak of the cold season.

The initiative involves the administration of a monoclonal antibody rather than a vaccine. It is available to all infants born since April 1, 2026. For babies born from September 1 onwards, the treatment can be administered directly in hospitals or clinics. For those born between April and August, family pediatricians will coordinate administration in their offices or public health facilities.

Regional Welfare Assessor Guido Bertolaso noted that the program aims to reduce severe complications such as bronchiolitis, which previously led to thousands of hospitalizations and significant healthcare costs. Previous campaigns saw high participation rates exceeding 90%, resulting in a marked decrease in emergency room visits and intensive care admissions related to RSV.
