Lombardy regional councilor demands action over railway service disruptions
Samuele Astuti, a regional councilor for the Democratic Party, has called for intervention from the Lombardy Region following repeated disruptions to the S5 railway line, which serves the Varese and Upper Milan areas.
Astuti highlighted that the 7:06 AM train from Castronno to Varese, a critical service for students, has been cancelled three times in a single week. He noted that these issues, alongside various delays and malfunctions on other provincial lines, are impacting commuters, workers, and students.
The councilor criticized the recent increase in regional railway fares effective September 1st, arguing that it is unacceptable to raise costs while service reliability declines. He emphasized that since the Region programs and finances the service, it must take responsibility for ensuring reliability rather than simply advising passengers to check the Trenord app.
Looking ahead, the Regional Council is scheduled to approve the Regional Mobility and Transport Program (PRMT) next month. Astuti stated that his group intends to advocate for concrete commitments within this program to improve service quality and reliability across the territory.
