Lombardy retail market shifts toward larger stores and new ownership models
The retail landscape in Lombardy is undergoing a structural transformation characterized by a shift in store size and ownership models rather than a change in total numbers. Between 2021 and 2024, the total number of retail outlets remained nearly stable, ending at 3,022 locations. However, the physical footprint is expanding significantly; new stores enter the market with an average size of 812 square meters, compared to 508 square meters for those closing.
Two distinct growth strategies have emerged among retailers. Aldi is focusing on a model of direct construction to expand its network, while Unes is growing by incorporating existing operational stores. This evolution impacts the supply industry, as changes in store ownership often lead to shifts in product assortments, commercial conditions, and private label offerings.
