California enacts hydrogen pipeline safety law

Governor Gavin Newsom has signed Senate Bill 804, known as the Hydrogen Pipeline Safety Act, establishing a specific safety framework for hydrogen infrastructure in California. The legislation aims to address the unique requirements of hydrogen transport as the state prepares to expand its hydrogen economy to assist in decarbonization efforts.

Co-authored by State Senator Bob Archuleta and Assembly Member Cottie Petrie-Norris, the bill was adopted unanimously by both legislative chambers. Proponents of the law, including H2C Safety Pipe, Inc., noted that the standards are designed specifically for hydrogen rather than relying on existing regulations developed for conventional natural gas pipelines.
