Léon Marchand withdraws from medley events at European Championships

French swimming star Léon Marchand has withdrawn from the 200m and 400m individual medley events at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris. The decision follows a grade 2 adductor injury sustained during the French Championships in late June, which was subsequently exacerbated during training in Marseille.

French team physician Sébastien Le Garrec stated that while Marchand's recovery is progressing favorably and healing is "almost complete," participating in the medley events carries a "non-negligible risk of recurrence." The technical demands of the breaststroke leg in medley races pose a particular risk to the injured muscle.

Despite these withdrawals, Marchand remains scheduled to compete in the 200m butterfly and 400m freestyle, as well as potential relay events, as these disciplines place less strain on the adductors. The athlete expressed disappointment over the setback but noted a sense of relief in prioritizing his long-term health and avoiding a more severe injury during the competition.
