Lončarević urges swift decision on Luka Modrić’s future in Croatian national team
Former coach Ilija Lončarević said the Croatian national football team must quickly resolve Luka Modrić’s status, arguing that a new squad cannot be built around a player whose future is uncertain. He warned that waiting six months to a year for a decision is unacceptable, especially as new coach Slaven Bilić prepares for Euro 2028. Lončarević also criticised former coach Zlatko Dalić, claiming time was wasted under his tenure, and praised Bilić for having a clearer plan and the ability to integrate new talent.
The comments came during a radio interview, where Lončarević emphasized that the team needs certainty to move forward and suggested that Modrić should either confirm his commitment or depart promptly.
