UK brothers receive life sentences for 1984 London murder solved by covert police operation
On 1 May 1984, Anthony Littler, a 45‑year‑old civil servant, was violently assaulted in a narrow side‑street near East Finchley underground station in London and died in hospital despite his belongings remaining untouched. No witnesses or forensic evidence led the case to remain unsolved for 42 years.
In 2013 Daniel Stewart approached police and identified his brothers, Michael Stewart (57) and Anthony Stewart (60), as the perpetrators. Detectives launched a secret operation, inserting an undercover officer into Michael Stewart’s circle and recording their conversations. The recordings were presented as key evidence at trial. On 10 July 2026 both brothers, who were 15 and 18 years old at the time of the attack, were convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment with minimum terms of 10 years for Michael and 15 years for Anthony. The court was told the brothers had targeted gay men for robbery, although nothing was stolen.
