London adds 22 BYD electric double‑deckers to TfL fleet

Transport for London (TfL) has received a shipment of 22 fully electric double‑deck bus bodies built by Chinese manufacturer BYD. The buses left the port of Yantai in China and arrived in London ready for service, forming the latest batch of the city’s zero‑emission fleet.

The vehicles, model BD11, feature a 532 kWh structural battery – the largest in the double‑deck segment – and are priced at about £400,000 each, roughly £100,000 cheaper than comparable UK‑built models. BYD now supplies more than half of London’s electric bus stock, which already totals around 3,000 vehicles, and the new arrivals are slated to replace older diesel units on high‑frequency routes such as the Superloop network.

TfL officials cite cost savings and emissions reductions as the main drivers of the shift toward fully Chinese‑built buses, marking a significant step in the capital’s decarbonisation strategy.
