London anti-Muslim hate reports surpass 2023 totals in six months

Reports of anti-Muslim hate and prejudice in London have surged, with 1,031 incidents recorded between January and June of this year. This figure already exceeds the 1,028 total reports logged throughout the entirety of 2023.

Monitoring organization Tell Mama reported a significant upward trajectory in cases over recent years. Statistics show a sixfold increase from 313 reports in 2021 to 818 in 2022, reaching a record 1,909 in 2023. The organization described the trend as a ‘sustained escalation of anti-Muslim hate’ rather than a temporary spike.

Iman Atta, director at Tell Mama, noted a worrying rise in repeat victimization and targeted anger, which she stated is leaving victims with a ‘fractured sense of personal safety.’ The increase follows high-profile incidents, including a ‘Unite the Kingdom’ rally in May organized by activist Tommy Robinson, which faced criticism from London officials regarding instances of Islamophobia.

Reported incidents include verbal abuse on public transport and physical harassment, such as Muslim women having their hijabs pulled or ripped off.
