London Assembly Member urges investment in Northern hubs over airport expansions

A senior London Assembly Member has urged Andy Burnham to reject proposals for expanding London’s airports, including Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, Stansted, and London City Airport. Leonie Cooper, Deputy Chair of the Environment Committee, suggested that instead of increasing capacity in the capital, investment should be directed toward major transport hubs in the North of England to support regional growth.

While the government has previously indicated support for airport expansions to drive economic growth, critics argue such moves prioritize the South East at the expense of the North and Midlands.
