London begins pedestrianization of Oxford Street
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has initiated a project to pedestrianize Oxford Street, aiming to transform the historic commercial artery into a major destination for the capital. The initiative involves an investment of 150 million pounds (approximately 180 million euros).
The project seeks to reverse a period of perceived decline characterized by store closures, increased crime, and the dominance of souvenir shops and franchises. While intended to revitalize the area and attract more business, the plan has faced opposition from the Westminster City Council, local residents, and some merchants.
