London boroughs push for more social housing to tackle crisis

London is facing a significant housing crisis, with one in 50 residents living in temporary accommodation and over 336,000 households on social housing waiting lists. Private renters also face rising costs that threaten their ability to remain in the capital.

In response, Liberal Democrat-led boroughs, including Kingston, Richmond, and Sutton, are implementing local initiatives to increase housing availability. In Richmond, the Ham Close regeneration programme is set to deliver 452 new homes, focusing on replacing outdated structures with modern community facilities and ensuring no net loss of affordable housing.

At the national level, the Liberal Democrats are advocating for policy changes aimed at increasing the annual production of social homes by 150,000. Their proposals also include granting local councils greater control over Right to Buy regulations and the associated receipts.
