London commemorates 90 years since the Battle of Cable Street

Various organizations are organizing events in London to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street. The historical event occurred in 1936 when thousands of local residents, including members of the Jewish community, successfully blocked a march by Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists through Whitechapel.

Scheduled commemorations include a unity parade in the borough of Tower Hamlets on Sunday, October 4. The march is expected to draw thousands of participants, moving from Whitechapel toward Gardiner’s Corner and Cable Street. The event will feature a final rally with addresses from MPs, trade union general secretaries, and relatives of those involved in the original 1936 resistance.

Additionally, a musical event hosted by Unite the Union will take place in Shoreditch on Saturday, October 3. Featuring performances by Sports Banger and King Alpha Sound System, the gig aims to raise funds for workers currently on strike.
