London councils approve new social housing developments

New social housing developments have been approved for two London locations. In Tottenham, Haringey Council is moving forward with a scheme on a 960m² site currently used as a Kings Road car park. Designed by Metropolitan Workshop, the project will feature four-bedroom, three-storey social rented homes built using Passivhaus principles. The development will utilize Lowie brick, a low-carbon masonry option with 70 per cent less embodied carbon than standard fired bricks.

In Wandsworth, the council has approved plans for 200 new social rent homes as part of the Battersea Power Station masterplan. Located on a brownfield site near the Grade II* listed power station, the project is being delivered in partnership with Battersea Power Station. Designed by Dowen Farmer Architects, the multi-layered residential building will include communal gardens and a south-facing roof garden. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with completion expected by 2029.
