London councils challenge government over proposed funding cuts

Leaders from four London councils—Wandsworth, Westminster, Kensington & Chelsea, and Richmond—have formally submitted proposals to the Treasury to challenge government funding reforms. The councils argue that the proposed Fair Funding Review, intended to redistribute resources to areas with higher deprivation, will instead strip hundreds of millions of pounds from the capital.

The financial impact varies by borough. Wandsworth faces an annual reduction of £84 million by 2029, a 40 per cent cut that may lead to service reductions and the suspension of voluntary sector grants. Westminster City Council anticipates a £160 million funding gap by 2029 and has already announced the layoff of 520 staff members. Kensington and Chelsea expects to lose £108 million over four years, roughly 40 per cent of its controllable budget.

Richmond faces the largest percentage reduction, with core funding projected to drop by £29 million annually by 2028/29, representing approximately 58 per cent of its allocation. Council leaders stated that these cuts will inevitably force increases in council tax and the reduction of essential services to maintain local operations.
