New data indicates a significant gap between public perception and reality regarding safety and demographics in London. While many residents believe crime rates are rising, actual figures show that violent and sexual crimes are among the lowest for the region in England and Wales.

Specifically, the public estimates that 30% of Londoners were victims of crime in the year leading up to September 2025, whereas the actual figure is 12.2%. Additionally, while 40% of people believe murders have increased, they have actually decreased by approximately 15%.

Demographic perceptions are also inaccurate; the public estimates that 35% of Londoners are Muslim, while the actual figure is 15%. Furthermore, a third of the public believes there are “no-go” areas in the city where Sharia law dominates, a sentiment held by two-thirds of Reform UK supporters.
