Josh Kerr breaks 27‑year mile world record in London
On 18 July 2026, British middle‑distance runner Josh Kerr ran the mile in 3:42.66 at the Diamond League meeting in London, improving Hicham El Guerrouj’s 1999 mark of 3:43.13 by 0.47 seconds. The performance set a new world record, a new meet record and a new British record for the distance.
Kerr had announced the attempt as part of “Project 222”, targeting a sub‑222‑second mile. He ran with pacemakers to the 800 m before taking the lead, finished with a deafening lap, and said, “It was very overwhelming… I was just me, my shoes and the track.” The stadium audience of roughly 60,000 spectators gave a standing ovation, and World Athletics awarded him a $50 000 bonus.
The race also produced a series of personal bests from the field, with Yared Nuguse (USA) second in 3:45.69 and Jake Heyward (GBR) third in 3:46.73. Kerr’s achievement marks the first mile world record broken on British soil in 27 years.
