London Fire Brigade tackles Mitcham flat fire, displaces 35 residents

On the afternoon of Saturday 25 July 2026 a major blaze erupted in a row of townhouses converted into flats on Belgrave Walk in Mitcham, South London. The fire quickly engulfed all three floors and spread into the roof spaces.

Approximately 125 firefighters from the London Fire Brigade, mobilised from Sutton, Wallington and Wandsworth stations, responded with 20 to 25 fire engines, a 32‑metre turntable ladder and drone capability to search inaccessible areas. The blaze was declared under control by around 17:52, though crews remained on scene to extinguish hot spots. Assistant Commissioner Pam Oparaocha said the operation was conducted under very hot conditions.

No injuries were reported, but the fire displaced about 35 residents. A local rest centre was set up for those affected, and officials asked nearby residents to keep doors and windows closed due to lingering smoke.
