London floating bus stops face calls for removal over safety concerns

Campaigners and disability groups are calling for the removal of floating bus stops in London, arguing that the infrastructure poses a “legitimate risk” to vulnerable pedestrians. These stops, which feature cycle lanes running between the pavement and the bus stop, require pedestrians to cross cycle paths to board or alight. While the Mayor of London and cycling advocates support these designs to promote safer cycling, groups such as the National Federation for the Blind UK have labeled them “totally unsafe” and inaccessible.

In response to safety concerns, the Department for Transport and Active Travel England have commissioned research into the safety and accessibility of floating bus stops. This project includes the formation of a Disability Advisory Group, composed of eight disabled individuals, to help inform new government guidance. The research aims to ensure accessibility is central to future designs and to determine if funding is required to modify existing sites.
