London Great Fire and Gregorian calendar transition
Historical records mark several significant events occurring on September 2. In 1666, the Great Fire of London broke out at Thomas Farriner's bakery on Pudding Lane. The fire spread rapidly due to strong winds, destroying approximately 10,000 buildings, including St Paul's Cathedral, before being contained by using gunpowder to create firebreaks.
In 1752, Great Britain and its American colonies transitioned from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. To correct the 11-day discrepancy, the day following September 2 was designated as September 14.
Other notable occurrences include the 1789 founding of the United States Department of the Treasury and the 1987 debut of the Philips CD player.
