London Lions seek EuroLeague franchise amid league's expansion

The EuroLeague plans to increase to 24 clubs for the 2027‑28 season and has identified London as a priority market. London Lions, domestic quadruple champions, have secured a EuroCup spot for 2026‑27 and are in talks to purchase an expansion franchise. Backed by Lithuanian technology investors, the club also intends to build the UK’s largest dedicated basketball arena.

EuroLeague CEO Chus Bueno confirmed the Lions’ interest and noted a franchise value of €80‑100 million, but warned of higher risk in London due to basketball’s limited spectator base. He suggested the new franchise might need to compete in a league other than Britain’s Super League Basketball to attract elite talent and viable gate revenue. Bueno ruled out multiple London franchises and said Manchester would be “too risky”.
