London Luton Airport disrupted by lightning strike and thunderstorms

Severe thunderstorms and a lightning strike targeting air traffic control equipment caused significant disruption at London Luton Airport. The technical failure forced a temporary suspension of all flight operations between 5:40 PM and 7:15 PM, leading to numerous cancellations and diversions.

Two Wizz Air flights were forced to declare low-fuel emergencies while circling South East England due to the delays. Flight W95378, arriving from Turin, diverted to London Gatwick, while Flight W92601, arriving from Prague, landed at London Stansted. Both aircraft landed safely without reported injuries.

In addition to aviation chaos, torrential rain caused flash flooding on roads surrounding the airport, forcing some routes to close. While flight operations have since resumed following technical repairs, airlines including easyJet have faced cancellations, and passengers may continue to experience residual delays as schedules are recovered.
