London luxury property market responds to UK Autumn Budgets

A decade-long analysis by Beauchamp Estates reveals that political and economic certainty significantly influences the sales of high-end properties in Prime Central London. The research tracked sales for homes valued above £5 million and £10 million during four-month periods surrounding Autumn Budgets from 2015 to 2025.

The strongest market performance was observed during the David Cameron and George Osborne administration. In 2015, sales of properties over £5 million rose by 30%, while the £10 million-plus segment saw a 65% increase as buyers moved to complete transactions before new stamp duty surcharges took effect.

In contrast, the market experienced volatility under other administrations. The Theresa May and Philip Hammond period saw muted results due to political uncertainty following the 2017 election. The 2022 ‘Mini-Budget’ under Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng caused a 24% drop in sales volume. The research also notes that government leaks and mixed messaging regarding budgets can trigger sales drops between 5% and 17%. Current Labour policies under Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves are described as facing market headwinds.
