London Mayor unveils plan to improve citywide mobile connectivity
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has released the London Mobile Connectivity Evidence Report and an interactive map to address inconsistent mobile network performance across the capital. Developed with support from Ookla, the report evaluates 4G and 5G networks based on download speeds, upload speeds, signal strength, and latency.
While London meets Ofcom’s minimum speed standards in all tested areas, no area currently passes all four of the ‘Strong’ connectivity checks. The findings indicate that inner north and east London, including boroughs such as Camden, Islington, Hackney, and Tower Hamlets, experience weaker signal strength compared to areas like the City of London and Kensington and Chelsea.
To combat these issues, the Mayor proposed a framework of ten practical steps for local boroughs. Recommended actions include appointing mobile connectivity officers, identifying council land for network equipment, and integrating mobile coverage planning into major developments. This initiative builds upon the Connected London programme, which has previously invested £30 million in fiber infrastructure.
