London Overground bridge replacement project to disrupt east London commuters

Network Rail will replace four 130‑year‑old railway bridges on the London Overground Suffragette line between Leytonstone High Road and Woodgrange Park stations. The works target bridges at Talbot Road, Strode Road, Stracey Road and Latimer Road in the Forest Gate area. Construction begins on 1 September at Talbot and Stracey Roads, with Strode and Latimer Roads starting on 28 September, and will continue through 2027, aiming for completion in late summer 2027.

The scheme involves extending support structures, demolishing the old decks and installing new spans designed to last until around 2150. Weekend closures on the line and temporary road and pavement shutdowns under each bridge are expected throughout the project. Residents and businesses have received letters about the works, and public drop‑in sessions are scheduled in August for community queries.

Network Rail’s infrastructure director, Joe Kennedy, said the new bridges will serve the community and rail passengers for generations, and the agency will work closely with locals to minimise disruption.
