London pedestrianizes nearly 1km of Oxford Street
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has officially launched the pedestrianization of approximately one kilometer of Oxford Street, stretching between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street. The initiative, managed by the Oxford Street Development Corporation, aims to revitalize the high street by removing private cars, taxis, buses, and bicycles to create a greener, safer destination.
While consumers have expressed enthusiasm for the increased walking space and improved shopping experience, the transition has faced some initial challenges. Reports indicate confusion among cyclists and e-scooter riders attempting to navigate the new zone. Transport for London (TfL) is working with rental companies to implement geofencing technology, which will reduce the power of e-bikes and scooters upon entering the restricted area to ensure compliance.
Questions have also been raised regarding accessibility for persons with disabilities. Mayor Khan described the implementation as a “historic” step and the first phase of a broader plan to transform the area.
