London pedicab scam involving Romanian group under investigation

Authorities and investigative journalists have identified a coordinated group of Romanian nationals allegedly operating illegal pedicab services in central London, specifically around Westminster Bridge and the London Eye. The group is accused of using deceptive pricing tactics to scam tourists.

Investigations reveal that operators often quote an initial low price, such as £20, only to demand hundreds of pounds once the passengers reach their destination. In one reported instance, a tourist was charged £350 for a short trip from the Tower of London. The pedicabs are often brightly decorated with lights to attract attention, which critics claim serves to distract customers from the lack of transparent pricing.

Reports indicate that these unauthorized operators frequently evade police presence near Westminster Bridge and may intimidate legal operators. The situation has prompted British police to launch an investigation into these practices. In response to ongoing controversies, UK authorities plan to introduce stricter regulations for the pedicab sector in 2026.
