London Stadium sale considered by Mayor Sadiq Khan

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has indicated that City Hall would consider a credible offer from West Ham United to purchase the London Stadium. The venue is currently publicly owned through organizations linked to the Greater London Authority, while the football club operates as a tenant under a 99-year lease.

The potential sale follows criticism regarding the stadium's financial impact, with reports suggesting the venue loses approximately £19 million annually, leaving taxpayers to underwrite the operating deficit. While ownership would transfer full responsibility for costs such as policing, stewarding, and pitch maintenance to the club, it could also allow for redevelopment to better suit football, addressing long-standing fan complaints regarding the distance between the stands and the pitch.

Despite the Mayor's openness to a proposal, internal responses from West Ham suggest that plans for ownership and redevelopment may be stalled for the foreseeable future. Previous attempts at significant structural changes or ownership shifts have faced complications due to existing long-term agreements, including those held by UK Athletics.
